10 Surprising Siri Secrets and Tricks

Do you think you know everything there is to know about Siri? These top 10 smart Siri secrets and tips might just surprise you. Or make you laugh.

In this article, we trigger Siri using the “Hey Siri” voice command. Did you know there are other methods available, depending on your device? You can read about them all in our how to use Siri guide.

1. Global thinking

You can use Siri to find out about the world. Ask the time for anywhere in the world, and you’ll get an answer. Ask where a country or place is, and its location will open up in Apple Maps.

Hey Siri, what time is it in the Galapagos Islands?

Hey Siri, where is Paris?

Hey Siri, where is Australia?

2. Quick conversions

Siri can perform all sorts of smart conversions. Just ask what data you want to be calculated, and Siri will oblige. This includes mathematical calculations, measurements, weights, and currency.

Hey Siri what’s 14 stone in kilograms?

Hey Siri, what’s 30% of 125?

3. Ask an 8 ball

Siri has a hidden 8 Ball mode, to use it, just say “Hey Siri, 8 Ball” before your request.

Hey Siri, 8 Ball, am I going to be rich this year?

The results are, of course, completely accurate.

4. Siri, can you rap? Siri, can you beatbox?

The answer to that is yes, to a point.

Ask either of these questions, and Siri will treat you to a fascinating performance of rapping or beatboxing, on repeat, until slowly fading out.

The results can be truly bizarre if you change your voice settings. For example, when hearing a beatbox or rap performed in a clipped British accent.

5. Coin toss

We’re all carrying less and less cash around with us these days, so Siri provides a digital alternative to the traditional coin flip.

Siri will dutifully respond with a “heads” or “tails” response.

5. Plan a night out

Bored and stuck for something to do? Turn to Siri for inspiration. Ask what’s on in your local area and get some entertainment ideas.

Hey Siri, what’s the best Italian restaurant nearby?

6. Correct your spelling

You can ask Siri to help with your spelling. Just say, “Hey Siri, how do I spell…..?”.

Siri will not only spell the word and read it out loud, but you are shown a definition of the word you requested. If the word has more than one meaning, you’re given the option to select the correct version from a list.

Hey Siri, how do I spell waiter?

7. Become a sports buff

Impress your friends and pretend you have an intimate and unquestionable knowledge of all things sporty. Ask Siri for information on sports fixtures, results as well as stats and team averages.

9. Ask Siri to find your keys*

If you manage to lose your phone or (more unlikely) a computer, you can ask Siri to tell you where it is.

Hey Siri, where is my iPad?

Siri will tell you where the device is, and either ask you if you want to ‘ping’ it (play an audio sound), or will begin to automatically. You also have the option of opening the Find My app to pinpoint its location on a map.

* Rumours are swirling that Apple is due to release small tracking devices called AirTags that can be attached to a keyring and other objects. Then be tracked with the Find My app.

10. Control your home

Using Apple’s HomeKit technology, you can integrate and control all manner of devices around the home. It’s possible to control lights, cameras, taps, and switch on the heating, all with a voice command.

Accessories can be on the expensive side, so we’ve already written a tutorial on how to integrate the Ikea range of smart home devices with HomeKit.
