You can use Siri commands to help you send, receive, read, and delete email messages in the same way you can text messages. For dictation tips on composing messages verbally using Siri, read our guide, full of commonly used phrases.
In this article, we trigger Siri using the “Hey Siri” voice command. Did you know there are other methods available, depending on your device? You can read about them all in our how to use Siri guide.
How to Send an Email
As always, Siri can be activated by pressing the side button or saying ‘Hey Siri’.
To send an email to a contact in your address book, say the following using the person’s name.
Hey Siri, send an email to Jane Smith
You can also use a relationship such as ‘husband’ or ‘sister’ if they are already set up in your contacts:
Hey Siri, send an email to my sister
If the contact has multiple email addresses, Siri will ask you to choose which one you want to use.
Siri will then ask you to dictate the subject line and the message content.
To include the subject in your initial request, say:
Hey Siri, send an email to Jane Smith subject meeting
Once your message is complete, Siri will ask you to confirm the message by saying ‘Yes’ or tapping ‘Send’ on the screen.
At this point, you get the opportunity to edit the email if you’re not happy with it. Say, ‘change subject’, ‘add’, or ‘change message’. You can also tell Siri to ‘cancel’ to abandon the email altogether.
At any time during this process, you can tap the message screen to open up the draft email in the Mail app to edit.
Ask Siri to Read out Emails
To check for new emails, say:
Hey Siri, check email
If you would like to read through recent emails that are in your inbox. Ask Siri to find them for you.
Hey Siri, read my messages
To show email from a specific contact, say:
Hey Siri, show emails from John Smith
Siri will display a list of emails from the contact and offer to read them to you.
You can ask if any new emails have arrived from a contact:
Hey Siri any new emails from Jane Smith?
Siri can also show you the last email sent by a contact:
Hey Siri, show me the last email from John Smith
To show emails from a particular date:
Show me all emails from the 1st July
Show me all emails from yesterday
Replying to Emails
You can reply to an email message by saying:
Siri will automatically begin the process of composing a new email message by prompting you to dictate the text.
The procedure is the same as described for composing a new email message from scratch.
There are several options for deleting messages from your inbox:
Hey Siri, delete all emails from 1st July
Hey Siri, delete all emails from yesterday
Hey Siri, delete all emails
It goes without saying that great care should be taken before asking Siri to delete anything.
